What Are Polyphenols?
Polyphenols are nutrients found in plants that are responsible for their health-promoting properties. The more colorful the plant, generally the higher the polyphenol content.
This is why fruits, especially berries, and vegetables are good sources of polyphenols.
Health Benefits of Polyphenols
Polyphenols offer plants protection against the sun’s radiation and help defend against disease. Just like they protect plants, they protect us in a similar way by acting as antioxidants to help combat inflammation and aid in improving immunity.
They play a key role in gut health by helping to defend against bad bacteria while increasing the production of good bacteria. One of their biggest benefits comes from their ability to activate AMP-activated protein kinase or AMPK. AMPK is one of the central regulators of metabolism and aids in the repair of damaged tissue.

How Much Do You Need?
Dr. Sears recommends aiming for a minimum of 1,000mg per day for general wellness. To give a sense of what 1,000mg of polyphenols per day looks like, it could be approximately 5 ½ cups of broccoli, 1 ½ cups of blueberries, 2 ¼ cups of strawberries or a combination of various fruits and vegetables. A good rule of thumb is that consuming 10 servings ofvegetables and fruits per day will provide about 1,000mg of polyphenols per day.
Are You Getting Enough Polyphenols?
Despite the health benefits of polyphenols, only 1 out of 10 adults meets the recommended 5 to 9 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.
Why Zone Polyphenols
Since most of us fall short on our intake of fruits and vegetables, let alone meet Dr. Sears’ recommended 10 servings per day, supplementing with purified polyphenols is a great way to fill in the gaps. Only about 2-20% of the polyphenols in fruits and vegetables are absorbed into the body which is why you need higher intakes of fruits and vegetables (about 10 servings per day) to see significant health gains. No matter which Zone Polyphenol you choose it has the purity and potency you’ve come to expect from Dr. Sears. It has to because his name is on every bottle.
CacoaRx and CacaoRx Plus
These are high purity, high-potency cocoa polyphenol extracts. Cocoa extracts have been clinically shown to help reduce insulin resistance, improve blood flow, improve cognition and reduce inflammation through their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
MaquiRx
The water solubility of polyphenols is critical because if they don’t get in your body, they can’t activate AMPK, a gene transcription factor that controls how we generate energy and regulate our metabolism. Maqui is the only polyphenol supplement that meets the criteria of concentration, structure, water-solubility, and degree of polymerization that you need to activate AMPK. Supplementing your diet with MaquiRx doesn’t mean you ignore the need to consume up 10 servings of fruits and vegetables per day, but the combination of the Zone Diet coupled with MaquiRx provides a good pathway for a longer and better life.
GRAS Status
Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) status is required for any ingredient in a food. For new food ingredients like Delphinidin concentrates, obtaining GRAS status means the product has to be have undergone rigorous toxicology testing must be approved by an outside panel of independent experts. This commitment of excellence is why we test every lot of Dephinidin Concentrated and post the results on our website.
